Fuel consumption in cars can be reduced by using hybrid concepts. Even for fuel cell vehicles a high power battery may cut costs and will allow the recuperation of energy during retarding. Alkaline batteries based on fiber structure nickel electrodes and metal hydride storage electrodes have shown an extreme cycle life combined with high power ability. In order to improve the power / energy ratio Ni/MH to even higher values the cells may be arranged in a bipolar stack design. The bipolar stacks are designed to provide comparatively high voltages, e.g. 12 V, 36 V and even 110 V. These stacks display electrochemical characteristics of a typical battery but are able to provide high power densities.
