In recent years, the volume of traffic has continuously increased. As our roads are already close to their capacity limit, it will become inevitably necessary to transfer a large part of the traffic volume to other means of transport, especially to the railway. However, the contemporary logistical system with its long trains and rigid timetables makes the railway unattractive compared to its competitors like the car. A modern logistics concept should feature direct and individual point-to-point connections without change of trains. This paper presents the current state of the development of the New Railway Technology Paderborn (NBP), which combines a modern logistics concept with suitable shuttles. The design and engineering of these shuttles have entirely followed mechatronic design guidelines, which are also presented in this paper: the complexity of the system requires a clear structure as well for the actual aggregates as for the information processing. After a brief overview of the mechatronic design structure a new controller design technique, the 'generalized cascade', will be presented on the basis of the cascade structure of SISO controllers and the decentralized controllers with state-vector feedback.
