Fast burning gas generating cords are used in many systems like for instance in submunition dispersers or in certain types of air bag inflators. For certain applications many pyrotechnic compositions, which are used already, develop insufficient amounts of often toxic gas. Other demands where most of this compositions fail are high thermal and high mechanical stability. Hence, this paper describes the development of a new pyrotechnic formulation basing on silicone as a binder and a mixture of ammoniumperchlorate and potassiumnitrate as oxidizer. This new composition generates rather nontoxic gas and is much more stable with respect to thermal and mechanical exposure. Experiments give evidence that with this newly developed composition burning cords reproducibly generate gas in comparatively large quantity within milliseconds of time.
