There are two main reasons for the under-inflation of tires. First of all, there is a natural loss of air due to diffusion through the tire and very small leaks between the tire and the rim as well as in the valve mechanism. For this reason, the cars' user manuals recommend to check the tire pressure biweekly. The second reason are tire damages, i.e. punctures which are for example caused by objects like nails or screws. Mostly, the provoked pressure losses occur fairly slowly with leak rates beween 0,1 and 1 kPa/min. As a consequence, the tire loses its load carrying capability, its deformation in the footprint area increases and therefore the increasing inner friction heats up the tire compound material. If this condition continuous over a certain time and in particular at higher speeds the tire finally can blow-up. In this paper, two different approaches to tire pressure monitoring are briefly compared: Direct systems measure the pressure and also the air temperature directly in the tire cavity whereas indirect systems derive the tire condition from depending parameters. The major part of the contribution is dedicated to the Tire Guard system which is a direct measuring system. The major system components and the system functions are explained and it is mentioned how the Tire Guard function can be integrated cost-effectively into body control units. Finally, an outlook on future system functions and concepts is given.
