A novel concept, namely the preparation of a silica-filled rubber compound in the absence of a silane, is presented. Two different kinds of silica are compounded with two different grades of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR). The physical properties of the resulting composites are compared with two reference compounds for the retention of properties after ageing. ENR as the rubber component together with silica achieves not completely satisfactory results due to the strong interaction of ENR with the silica surface, hence the presence of silane as a hydrophobizing agent is proven necessary.
