Aluminium MMCs represent an extraordinary class of alternative materials for establishing advanced design in the automotive segment. However, significant technological, engineering and economic hurdles have to be overcome before these materials can be mass consumed in the next generations of vehicles. One of the key obstacles is their high cost. Significant material cost savings (up to 30 %) can be achieved by replacing bulk MMCs by MMC coatings or claddings. This is particularly useful for the production of aluminium-based wear resistant automotive components such as pistons, disc brakes, and cylinder liners. In these parts, Al MMC linings display the same wear properties as bulk composites and the surface engineered properties are completely independent of the core material.
