Oil-tempered wires to be used for cold-formed coil springs and cold-formed coil springs made from said wires were developed with the intention of applying short period heat treatment on SUP-190, a spring material with excellent corrosion fatigue strength, which was developed by our company and is currently mass produced for hot-formed springs, and obtained the following results: The effects of chemical components and preheat-treated structure were investigated in the basic evaluation and confirmed-that the short period heat treatment is applicable to SUP 190. It was possible to produce induction oiltempered wires of good qualities using an actual furnace. Cold-formed coil springs made from the induction oil-tempered wires produced using SUP190 by means of the short period heat treatment proved to have better fatigue strength and corrosion fatigue resistance than cold-formed coil springs made from SAE 9254. Cold-formed coil springs using SUP190 showed slightly weaker sag resistance than springs using SAE9254, but they were within the tolerable range. At present, Cold-formed coil spring using SAE9254 is used generally with design stress approximately 1050MPa. However, spring using SUP190 can rise design stress 1200MPa.The relation between design stress and spring weight is grafically illustrated. Consequently, a weight reduction of approximately 20 % is possible compared to the cold-formed coil springs made from SAE 9254, which has hitherto been the norm. Moreover, it can be used for side force controlling springs, which require more accurate shape control, since it can be applied to cold-formed springs.
