This article begins with an overview of the present-day automotive electrical system, then goes on to discuss some of the new types of electrical equipment likely to be appearing on cars of the future. The authors expect to see the electrical system voltage rise from 12 to something like 42 volts, to meet increasing power demand. And this will mark a major transition in efforts to reduce fuel consumption. Electrical system designers will need to adapt rapidly to the new standard, as, indeed, will equipment manufacturers.
