This paper presents the principle of operation, and experimental results of a modified step-down converter for charging of Lithium-Ion batteries. Besides the normal charge current through all the series connected cells of a battery, this converter generates small parallel charge currents for each cell, leading to a charge balancing effect for the battery. The design of a breadboard converter is presented and performance measurements of the charger together with a 3 cell space Li-Ion battery are given.
