The development of the design and of the manufacturing of a subreflector rotary antenna mechanism is described. The mission profile of this electric machine is described, and the engineering solution is summarized. The different components of such non-conventional electric machine are described carefully, and the experience following from the design and the manufacturing process is witnessed. The mathematical model of the machine is studied and a new numerical technique for the FEM calculation of the electromagnetic torque in a rotating electric machine is introduced, that is an extension of the well-known Maxwell stress tensor method. The application is focused on the evaluation of the holding torque, allowing to appreciate the accuracy and the reliability of the proposed model.
