An assembly of multiple materials can make it difficult to conduct a single fatigue evaluation of the product. For example, the wiper system used in this report is constructed of one zinc pivot housing, one plastic pivot housing, a steel frame tube, and a steel motor bracket. This paper presents a testing technique and analysis to determine the life and factor of safety for the wiper system linkage that can be used for both accelerated and over-stress testing methods. Over-stress testing is often used in design development for quick test results of a product's weak point. More helpful would be to know how well the product would hold up to real life under various loading conditions. Characteristics, such as stress levels, fracture reliability, and fatigue limit can be compiled using popular fatigue analysis theories such as ray projected method and Miner's law to calculate the factor of safety of the product for both infinite and finite design philosophies. It is shown that over-stress testing can be used to understand the load-life relationship within the product for either design intent. In both cases, a factor of safety can be produced. The ray projected method defines a factor of safety by comparing the gap between the fatigue limit and the operating load distributions. Infinite design analysis, on the wiper linkage used in this study, showed an unsatisfactory factor of safety, therefore, the finite design theory was analysed. Miner's law, when coupled with a customer profile, and the load-life curve yields a damage number for each loading condition. From the total damage number the product's factor of safety was achieved. Lastly, the described finite design method also allows for creating other accelerated tests or even for combining other abuse tests.
