The basic concept of the Toyota mild hybrid system is to provide a smooth and reliable engine restarting method from an idling stop, while at the same time being able to drive all of the accessories during the idling stop. This concept has been realized and marketed for the first time in the world, by utilizing a newly developed simulation of belt behavior to optimize the specification of the belt and its peripheral parts. The new simulation of the belt behavior is utilized in order to achieve an engine starting system that is driven through a belt using a small M/G (Motor/Generator) as the power source. Thanks to the simulation, the system is optimized by reducing the load to the belt and ensuring the engine restartability by the M/G. The method of evaluating restartability after idling stop has been established. Restartability is sufficiently ensured at such conditions as various kinds of dispersion are taken into account by newly developing the control for second start. A magnetic clutch that disconnects the small M/G and the belt system from the engine crankshaft is newly developed and adopted to drive the accessories during an idling stop.
