A conventional spark ignition engine has been modified to use hydrogen gas as fuel to drive a generator for a constant-speed application on hybrid-electric bus. These modifications have included the use of a special cam, special design for the intake and the exhaust, computer control and fuel injection. Use of a catalyst brought NOx emissions to very satisfactorily low levels. At a compression ratio of 14, some problems with preignition were found to occur. Water injection was shown to be quite effective in improving this aspect of performance. The engine has proven to be quite efficient and suitable for the bus application. The engine was extensively tested using a water brake dynamometer connected to a standard PC. A plot of the maximum corrected power and the volumetric efficiency versus engine speed was generated. Some operational data for the engine are given.
