This is a report on the development of vertically-narrow headlamps by combining the Free Formed Surface System with the Projector System. Headlamps are very important automobile parts which affect the total image of a car. The latest headlamp design trend tells us that different types of headlamp designs such as vertical, horizontal and round ones have been offered and more innovative designs have been required. Especially vertically-narrow headlamps have been required more and more to match the contours of the sports car bodies. In order to meet the requirement, we have analyzed the advantages of Free Formed Surface System, the Projector System, and the combination of the two systems. We have combined the Free Formed Surface System with the Projector System, which is called P&F System, and applied it to low beams with 50 mm high x 200 mm wide. The basic idea about the P&F System is that the reduction of the diffused light caused by narrowing vertically in the Free Formed Surface System should be supplemented by combining with the Projector System. Here, the effects of narrowing in each system are indicated as follows. In this system, large diffused light, medium diffused light and spot light are formed in left and right directions at each part of the reflector in the P&F System, advantages of both systems are adopted; diffused light is formed by the Projector System and spot light is formed by the Free Formed Surface System. The structure of a headlamp with the P&F System is shown. Diffused light is formed by taking the light Into the Projector System, which is not available in the Free Formed Surface System by narrowing vertically. Low beam light distribution is enhanced by combining light distributions from both systems. An improvement of the beam availability can be achieved by optimizing reflector parameters of the Projector System, obtained by a simulation.
