Automotive manufacturers paint components throughout the vehicle for corrosion protection and aestetics. However, measuring the actual corrosion resistance requires weeks to months using salt-spray, cyclic and whole vehicle testing. In addition, we need to move quality assurance into the production cycle where variations can be controlled. This study aims to provide the missing in-plant monitor, based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. A fastener finish quality monitor based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been successfully demonstrated on coated steel fasterners. The coating qualities can be assessed by comparing the measured spectrum with storad spectra of known samples, or by determining values of the coating-specific parameters extracted from the spectrum. Fasteners with a typical coating (zinc phosphate/zinc-rich epoxy/aluminum tin topcoat) can be easily classified to identify deviations from the specified condition, using impedance signatures. With automated data analysis software, coating variation and cause can be identified within 20 minutes. The new quality monitor can be interfaced with fastener coating operations in three ways: Measure and control parts quality in manufacturing, facilate process development, and predict corrosion performance based on signature changes for fasteners exposed to a test environment.
