Many automotive safety devices like anti-lock braking systems (ABS), anti-collision radars, airbags, etc., require an absolute speed accurate measurement. An on-board Doppler sensor using a single fixed frequency and a broad beam of emission is particularly well suited for high-risk situations in automotive applications. It combines the advantages of broad-beam-of-emission Doppler sensors, i.e. a high probability of having a reflecting obstacle in the antenna footprint, and of single frequency emission devices allowing for easy implementation. It has been shown that the accuracy of this sensor is very high for low density obstacle distributions giving accurate results in a large range of obstacle positions in comparison to narrow beam sensors. A modified Radon transform allows for a better automation of the process to separate frequency contributions due to several obstacles being present in the antenna footprint. Finally, the same sensor can also give the value of the vehicle height above the road.
