Dynamically loaded plain bearings need a very extensive iterative calculation. In addition to older simply applicable programs complex software systems having high performance were developed in the last years. They often use an FE-net of the whole engine. The advantages and disadvantages of these programs are being discussed. Important findings have been obtained by experiments at two fired automotive engines and on a newly developed plain bearing test rig with engine typical load. The results improve the calculation for conceptual design. Comprehensive experiment investigations are necessary for the verification of the complex software systems. Engine and bearing designers need as well both simply applicable programs for conceptual design and complex software systems for final calculation.
