New transmission concepts still need 'wet' friction systems. Smooth control, low drag-torque and judder-free performance are development priorities. The whole clutch design, it's friction material, the fluid it uses and the manufacturing processes are just a few of the areas available for optimization. The combination of the friction material, it's groove pattern and the fluid it operates in should eliminate shudder and provide improved clutch control. The advantages of sintered metallic friction materials can be seen in continuous-slip applications, too. Under severely arduous test conditions, HS Streusinter exhibits excellent performance when used with a specific fluid additive package. The losses incurred in 'wet' clutches have been simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The modelling of groove patterns and the calculation of the drag-torque are described in this paper to provide an impression of fluid behaviour in a 'wet' clutch system.
