The fluid used in an automotive transmission is an important component that serves many functions, including power transmission and reduction of the friction and wear of sliding parts. As the performance of transmissions has continued to improve, the performance demanded of transmission fluids has also risen to higher levels every year. Accordingly, the fluid as a key functional component has been positioned and it has been working on the development of new fluids. This paper explains the performance attributes that automotive transmissions require of fluids and describes the fluids used in the newest automatic transmissions and innovative CVTs.
