This article outlines the methodology used for demonstrating lightning protection on the NH90 helicopter. The methodology, based on sophisticated electromagnetic code for computing the effects of lightning on helicopters, was applied once NH90 definition was mature enough. Preliminary analysis and test results indicate that the helicopter will be safe and operational under storm conditions. Computations and measurements were performed to assess how equipment would react to lightning strike. Computations yielded improved understanding of lightning coupling phenomena. Measurements corroborated the computation results and yielded a substantial database of coupling results. The authors compare results from tests and computations.
