The adage 'a chain is as strong as its weakest link' is a phrase that could serve as the official mantra of computer security. An operating system is a difficult system to administer because it is not only complex and cantankerous but also hard to secure. Their enormous configurability, the fact that vendors do not ship secure systems, and that it requires significant amounts of time, resources, and expertise to safeguard a host are only some of the reasons that so many systems are insecure in any type of network, commercial or tactical. To compound the problem, not only do systems become less secure due to usage, but with the rapidly changing security field, it requires considerable effort to stay abreast of the latest information. Army Research Labs is trying to address the security of the operating system in a tactical wireless environment through the use of public domain and/or commercial means. ARL is evaluating monitoring, deployment and auditing techniques in the wire commercial domain. By evaluating the wire domain, ARL can determine what works and how they would work in the tactical area. There are numerous ways to protect the wire/wireless network via public domain or commercial software. Some of the concerns in the wireless domain are bandwidth, complexity, implementation and deployment of monitoring and auditing tools, the implementation and deployment of encryption, public and private key information, and certificate authority. Also, ARL are going to address configuration problems, correcting or catching misuse and misunderstandings, and computers that have not received the latest patch or security fix from the vendor within the wireless domain.
