The electric power consumed in vehicles has increased yearly. To improve the efficiency of the power, there is a movement towards increasing the vehicle's voltage from 14 V to 42 V. The wiring harness will be one of the most important components of the 42 V system; however, there are many technical problems that need to be solved. In particular, the arc discharge phenomenon that occurs when the working connectors are suddenly unmated, is the most serious problem. In our experiments, the arc discharge damaged the tip of the terminal (approximately 5 mm of the terminal melted) and the temperature of the terminal reached over 1000 degrees C. In order to overcome this problem, we developed a new type of connector. In this study, we show that this new connector can drastically reduce the level of arc energy generated in the discharge between the terminals.
