The paper deals with the current progress in rear lighting technology. Within the competition in offering the best vehicle for the individual customer safety aspects but also the appearance of the rear lights are getting more and more important. The investigation is based on the equipment of LEDs within rear lamps. In combination with the CHMSLs (Center High Mounted Stop Lights) the styling but also the safety feature which one can realize is different. In achieving shorter reaction times when using LEDs there were already made same general experiments in a laboratory. For the first time experimental analysis was performed of reaction times of stop function of rear lamps including CHMSLs in various combinations in real traffic conditions, taking conventional tungsten halogen bulbs and LEDs as a light source. For high mounted stop lights today the LED technology is getting more common. Due to the short rise time of these light sources the reaction time of the drivers when applying the brakes is shorter (app. 200ms). A dynamic test under real traffic condition was conducted to verity the already published laboratory results on LEDs reaction time benefits. The experimental results resented are demonstrating that a further safety effect in applying LEDs für rear lamps rather than using them in CHMSLs can be achieved if the entire stop signal (CHMSL and rear lights) will be equipped with LEDs. The advantage is present during day and night driving. The reaction time was generally smaller für men than for women, which can be a result of the different experience in driving. It seems to be worth not only regarding the different styling issues in trying to be attractive for the final customer but also für safety reasons to consider LED applications für rear lamps in the future.
