The exciting styling possibilities of DLS attracts the attention of designers for a long time. Due to the high efficiency of HID light sources, nowadays also the performance of such a DLS can compete with existing Xenon headlamps, thus combining the benefits of both technologies to a completely new headlighting concept. Starting from the performance of present HID headlamps and based on sound considerations of losses of the various components of a DLS, the beam requirements are traced back to the necessary properties of a HID light source and bulb driver dedicated for DLS. To improve even further the performance of DLS systems, we report on the results of new 60 W Xenon prototype bulbs especially designed for incoupling purposes. Bulb, reflector and their fixation and alignment are constructed to meet automotive specifications. These light sources show a superior incoupling efficiency, which make them ideally suited for a DLS headlighting system.Investigations were performed to find out the possible efficiencies of the light incoupling for a fiber optical headlighting systems. By optimized incoupling arrangement with short arc bulb and dedicated elliptical reflector prototype an incoupling efficiency of 57% was achieved. The influence of source, fiber misalignment and reflector hole diameter were evaluated. From these results the benefits of a pre-focused bulb reflector are becoming obvious, resulting in a clear performance advantage of such a solution over a replaceable bulb with its additional tolerances. With realistic estimates for the losses of the other system components an overall efficiency of 33% is feasible, which is competitive to conventional projection or complex shape HID systems. As result of this study, a fiber optical headlamp with 800 Im per beam should be feasible using a 50W HID bulb.
