The vertical vehicle dynamics causes glare stimuli on the oncoming drivers eye during nighttime driving. In order to investigate the effect of these glare stimuli on the human vision, a description of dynamic glare is presented for the time range tram 0.3 second to 10 seconds. Dynamic glare describes the temporary glare due to pitching movements of the vehicle. This glare arises from the vehicle-characteristic interaction of the design of the vehicle's undercarriage and the light distribution of the headlamps. An adaptation model explains the disability glare effect, it allows determining the readaptation time by computing the temporal course of the threshold enhancement factor. A statistical analysis is given about the time course of the glare illuminance that arises in today's nighttime traffic at the eye of oncoming driver in 50 m distances. The discomfort glare aspect is examined by the evaluation of observers with the dynamic glare rate. An equation is derived, which is able to calculate the dynamic discomfort glare rate for glare stimuli of rectangular shape. The presented physiologically based, functional model combines the adaptation kinetics of the eye when responding to a light stimulus, with the amount of scattered light from the glare illuminance that induces a time-dependent veiling luminance. This allows determining the time course of the luminance threshold enhancement during transient adaptation.
