The authors present a new test method for investigation of lubricants under extreme pressure conditions. The method has been developed at the Tribology Department of ITeE, and is realised using a four-ball tester. During a run the load increases continuously. To assess a tested oil, one should analyse the scuffing propagation until seizure (the stop of the relative movement of the balls) occurs, as well as wear of the stationary balls. About 20 commercial, automotive gear oils were tested. The authors have stated that - using the method - it is possible to investigate the action of AW and EP additives in gear oils, as well as classify such oils with respect to API GL quality levels. This allows for resigning (at least at the preliminary stage) from very expensive component tests, which is of great economic importance, since four-ball tests allow to find an optimum, economic oil formulation at a relatively low cost. A very short time of the realisation of the new test method, in comparison with component tests, is its additional advantage. So, the new method can be successfully employed at petroleum laboratories.
