The noise emission from road traffic causes one of the most important ecological damage in the European Union. Since 1972 the limitation of the noise emission of motor vehicles is included in the type approval legislation in the EU. The annoyance can be reduced by a limitation system that is based on noise emission levels. With respect to source related measures the following priority list is proposed: 1. The reduction of tyre/road noise must get the highest priority because this measure achieves the broadest effect on in-use noise emissions. 2. The noise emission of heavy duty vehicles has to be further reduced, most likely on the basis of a more realistic measurement method. 3. The noise limits for light duty vehicles should be lowered to the today's car limits. Further reductions should be linked to the heavy duty vehicle system. The measurement method should be modified to bring the driving conditions more in line with practical use. 4. The noise limits for motorcycles should also be linked to the limitation system for heavy duty vehicles. 5. The noise limits for cars should be adjusted to the current state of the art, the measurement method should be modified. 6. Additional provisions shall be specified for cycle bypass prevention.
