In this article, major improvement to reduce the weight and size of the capacitors as well as data about performance of the capacitors of the new generation of EDLCs in serial connections of modules will be presented. By improved electrode technologies and remarkable progresses in the assembling technology a new generation of electromechanical double layer capacitors is available. A Ragone diagram for UltraCaps modules is shown. For the new generation of UltraCaps the energy could be increased by a factor of two in combination with an increase of the power density in the same range. Therefore these capacitors offer some advantages for automotive applications. As EDLCs can be used to improve the start of the engine in combination with integrated starter generators or in start stop functions, the low temperature characteristics of these components are of major interest. Even though the nominal voltage of the capacitors could be raised from 2.3 V to 2.5 V still serial connection of UltraCaps are necessary to cover the required voltages in automotive applications like 14 V or 42 V. In this article, charging performance, cell voltage balancing, self-discharge performance, discharge performance and power storage in a CSG application are discussed.
