This contribution presents the design of planar 77 GHz-antenna arrays consisting of serially fed microstrip patch elements. The patch rows are arranged in parallel and fed by a corporate feed network. An extended transmission line model (ETLM) is introduced to enable a systematical synthesis of such seriesfed microstrip, patch rows. Different array antennas have been designed, fabricated, and characterized by measurements. The measured results are in good agreement with simulations using ENSEMBLE and with the results of the introduced ETLM, if the dielectric constant of the substrates is supposed to be ephsilon r = 2.2 as recommended by ROGERS at 10 GHz. Despite the necessity of a very precise fabrication and of accurately characterized substrates at 77 GHz, the desired performance of the microstrip antenna arrays can almost be achieved by using the above described fabrication process.
