For auto-body structures, thin walled hydroformed steel sheets, either tube or sheet hydroformed, are recommended as a replacement for traditional methods to form auto-body components. This provides to some extent a remarkable potential for weight reduction and cost savings. Hydroforming includes several manufacturing aspects in particular part design, pre-bending, press and tooling, and also naturally the material to be formed. For this purpose typical automotive steel sheet grades which include all coated products can be used. The combination of strength and ductility offered by newly developed multiphase steels is superior to conventional high-strength steels. To understand the material effects of hydroforming. details characterizing the full manufacturing process are needed. In contrast to the sheet metal stamping processes, the hydroforming process is dominated by a stress state to make the material flow into the die cavity. Thin walled tube hydroformed steel sheet sections are recommended as a replacement for mainly spot-welded boxshape components. Sheet hydroforming promises to be a useful forming technique to improve dent resistance without increasing thickness. It permits the production of more complex parts, or a reduction in the number of forming operations in the production process. Both manufacturing methods are suitable for weight reduction and strength improvement measures. Parallel plate hydroforming can be used to form hollow shells in one manufacturing step having high stiffness properties or providing space to be filled with e.g. fuel.
