High and low-cycle fatigue cracking of steel ship hull structures was described. Wave loads responsible for the cracking were taken into consideration. Examples of the fatigue-crackable hull structure components (joints of mutually perpendicular shell plating stiffeners, cut-outs in trusses for the shell plating stiffeners and floors of double bottoms in bulk carriers, cargo hatch corners in strength decks) were given. Requirements of the Polish Register of Shipping Rules for classification and construction of seagoing ships concerning fatigue lives of the structures were presented. The fatigue strength of a deck-plating butt weld connection was estimated to examplify the proposed calculation procedure.
