Currently, sputtered molybdenum disulphide (MOS2) is an established coating for space applications. However, when operated in air, molybdenum disulphide loses much of its lubricating power, thus preventing in-air ground testing. The results of this study show that low bias a-C:H have lubricating capacity (my < 0.1) under vacuum. For brief periods following running-in, extremely low friction coefficient values (my < 0.01) were measured. This is particularly striking at high loads. Coating the counterbody with DLC in the tribotest enhanced the lifetime with a factor of two. The tested a-C:H films offer prospects for ground testing in ambient air of components because of their high endurance in air. However, the limited lifetime in vacuum of the coating at this stage of development limits the applications to mechanisms that have to perform only for a limited number of actions in space. This work represented a screening study using selected coating types. In the attempt to improve the tribology of a-C:H films for space applications, a fundamental approach is needed whereby the relationship between basic coating properties and performance in vacuum is established. Coating properties must be improved on two fronts: lifetime under vacuum and running-in friction.
