A pearl nickel finish has been produced on plastic parts by using low temperature, arc vapor deposition to deposit nitrogen doped, zirconium films onto parts plated with a satin finish. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that this combination of processes produced interior trim plastic parts for use in automobiles that meet typical automotive performance specifications. This paper describes the plating and arc deposition processes used to produce pearl nickel finish, plastic parts. A summary of the performance standards for interior trim automotive parts is also presented.
