The individual mobility offered by automobile is an essential part of our society. However, at the same time in industrial countries the car is exposed to harsh criticism as far as environmental pollution is discussed. Beside this criticism from society laws regarding to the End of Life phase increase the complexity of the product development process. The proposed connection and the integrated use of LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and LCD (Life Cycle Design) offers the chance to reduce the environmental impacts caused by the automobile on the one hand side and to fulfill legislative requirements on the other hand side. This chance is based on the direct integration of LCD in the design process. By having the possibility to do just in time evaluations and comparisons of single parts the designer can easily find out the best solution for his design problem. This just in time assessment offers a higher innovative potential than the usual process of development of parts by the designer - the time intensive environmental assessment by the LCA expert afterward and an eventual re-design of the part after the LCA assessment. To avoid the isolated optimization of parts, LCA based LCD always focuses on the whole life cycle of the complete car. For a successful implementation of LCD the total integration of the LCD tool in the designers workflow is the most necessary point. Current LCID tools can offer a certain integration in the way of thinking and working of the designer, the next step for the future is a full integration of LCID directly in computer aided design process. Nevertheless the new approach has some limitations which are already well known from fields like LCA. So a major question to be answered is the quality of used data. Furthermore the necessary aggregation of information for the use in LCD inquires some problems. For first applications of LCD company specific weighting keys can be used to show the benefits towards a sustainable and therefore cost effective Life Cycle Design of future products. Than continuous development and optimization of LCD can take place where the experience from the earlier case studies can be used to finally bring LCD on a standardized level.
