A set of three sub-micrometer resolution, 2-dimensional position sensors have to be operated in closed-loop with magnetic actuators for vibration control and damping of a huge structure (170 kg, 1 x 0.5 x 0.5 m) to be placed on the International Space Station, which will contain experiments to be performed in a micro-gravity environment. A prototype of a 1-dimensional sensor has been realised and tested at Alenia premises. The sensor consists in a duo-lateral Position Sensing Detector (PSD) having an active area of 2.5 mm (along the measuring direction) by 0.8 mm, a laser module emitting at 657 nm and a signal conditioning electronics.
