The main components of a fuel cell drive system, as being set up as a test rig at Research Centre Jülich (FZJ), are the compact methanol reformer (CMR), a gas cleaning unit, and a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC). The corresponding plant and system technology has been developed by FZJ and forms the technical basis for testing the fuel cell drive system with methanol steam reforming. Within the framework of short- and long-term studies more than 10,000 hours of operating experience are available for the PEFC, during which the current density / voltage behaviour was determined for different fuel gases as well as the performance efficiency during operation in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). The results show a very low voltage loss of the single cells of about 10 mV after 10,000 hours of operation. A comparison of the current density / voltage characteristics of selected fuel gases shows the same operating behaviour using hydrogen 3.0 and permeate from the gas separation membrane installed behind the CMR. Only the fuel gas mixtures with high CO2 fractions between 21 and 23 % show a voltage loss increasing with time due to increasing CO poisoning of the anode catalyst made of platinum.
