This paper from the patent owner introduces a new system and a new technology for an effective, economic and environment-friendly handling of bulk materials with regard to ship transportation. The availability and the advantages of the new concept are demonstrate by several examples. Up to date, it is necessary to have both shiploader and shipunloader, although the loading and the unloading mostly do not take place simultaneously. Here, a Combined Ship Loader/Unloader (CSLU) would be a more economical solution. The Semi-continiuous shipunloader (SCSU) from Krupp Födertechnik (Germany) has a grab as pick-up device and a boom conveyor between the pick-up device and the quay conveyor. It can easily be turned into a combined ship loader/unloader (CSLU). SCSU and CSLU differ by a telescopic discharge chute, an intermediate conveyor and a tripper car that have been added to the CSLU. The boom system is modified to fit the new structural and functional conditions. The boom conveyor works in two directions. The modifications of the machine are reasonable. The telescopic discharge chute as well as the tripper car and the intermediate conveyor can be designed to be removable, so that the machine can be easily adapted to different requirements. For ports, where loading and unloading ships sometimes have to be done simultaneously, at least two machines have to work together. For distributing the material between machine A and machine B when loading ships, a splitting device is required. It can be arranged either between the tripper car and the intermediate conveyor or between the intermediate conveyor and the boom conveyor of machine A. The capacity of the quay conveyor allows both machines to load or unload ships simultaneously. For transshipment, machine A acts as unloader and machine B as loader. The material taken from ship A flows via the boom conveyor of machine A onto the quay conveyor. After passing the tripper car shifted into the upper position, the intermediate conveyor and the boom conveyer of machine B, the material is discharged into the hold of ship B by the telescopic discharge chute of machine B. The ships can be moored on the same side of the quay or each on one side. For the purpose of simultaneous handling of different materials , at least one quay conveyor has to be provided for each machine in the handling system. It is even possible that a machine unloads the material from a ship while another machine is loading a fully unloaded hold of the same ship simultaneously for reducing the turnaround time of the ship.
