Often, DC/DC converters are designed with protection circuits; both to protect the converter against external mishaps and to protect the external input and output connected devices against internal control loss. Here, the converter function would normally be under the control of an external computer. In this paper, an elementary directional control system is proposed as a backup in case of failure of the external power management computer. One proposed configuration of a 42 V electrical system would include a power management computer that would have inputs relating to the system bus voltages, alternator current, the state of charge of the batteries, and current in the batteries. If the normal control systems fail, the alternator should shut down to protect the 42 V battery against overcharge. The discussion here relates to the use of the DC/DC converter to keep the system bus voltages up for an additional length of time in the case of external system failure. The characteristics of the lead acid battery allow that emergency operation of a bi-direction DC/DC converter based on sensing battery voltage. A microprocessor added to a DC/DC converter is thus able to detect when the system bus voltage is abnormal and switch over to internal control. The internal control should be able to both set the direction of power flow and control an appropriate turnoff strategy.
