There are two surge control system designs for stations with coolers on the TransCanada gas transmission system. In the first design, common on the TransCanada mainline, the surge controller controls flow at the compressor by manipulating the station cooled recycle valve. A hot recycle valve is also available but is used only for starting and stopping the unit. In the second design, originating from the former NOVA Alberta system, the surge controller controls flow at the compressor by manipulating the hot recycle valve. Other logic external to the surge control system controls the cold recycle. This logic uses timers and ramps to open the cold recycle valve whenever the hot recycle valve is not fully closed. This paper investigates the dynamic performance of the closed loop flow control function of both systems using a simulation program that has been calibrated to field data. The results of this study indicate that the cold recycle surge control system has some advantages over the hot recycle system: 1. The performance of a surge control system on a unit with 42' yard piping and 230 m of piping in the loop, including a cooler, is adequate and meets the response time standard of 10 seconds to achieve zero error following a setpiont change. 2. A hot recycle system may exhibit unstable behavior. This behavior is characterized by constantly increasing temperature and the recycle valve becoming 100% open. It is a result of the integrator in the surge controller combined with negative process gain. It is unlikely that this effect can be removed by adjusting the gain terms in the controller. 3. Cold recycle systems offer an advantage over the hot recycle system since they have a similar time response but do not possess inherently unstable tendencies.
