Much interest in developing a new class of flight vehicles MAV (Micro Aerial Vehicle), has been increased for new military operation concept and emergency aircraft application under hostile environments.Study results are presented on the design and analysis of the electric motor for propulsion system and the power converter for power management, which are equipped on the MAV. One of the critical issues on the MAV is to improve the power density of the propulsion devices equipped. This goal can be satisfied by new design concept, new material used, and new packaging implementation. Design and experiment of three-phase brushless DC (Direct Current) motor with high power density are reported and comprehensive design and analysis of the DC/DC converter with new topology are also presented. Considering the basic requirement that total weight of the propeller-based MAV under development is about 100 g, the propulsion motor of about 5 W-power rating and the power converter of about 15 W-class are required. Design and analysis results of three-phase brushless DC motor specially purposed for MAV applications are presented. The axial-flux type and the radial-flux type of brushless DC motors are designed, comparing slotless type with slot type. A new commutation torque ripple reduction algorithm is also investigated for driving the motor. A specially designed topology for the MAV power converter and the respective modeling and control characteristics are described. As a single switch-ended buck/boost converter, upper converter is a flyback converter and lower converter is equal to a boost converter. Such two types of converters are combined into the new single converter, in which the main switch acts as a common switch for power conversion and the transformer functions as an inductor for boost converter as well as a transformer for flyback converter. In upper converter, a rectifying diode is replaced with a synchronous rectification switch to regulate the output voltage.
