Partial zero emission vehicles (PZEV) must meet very low tail-pipe and zero evaporative emission levels in order to qualify for credits in California's zero emission vehicle program. This paper concentrates on methods to achieve the former and gives some insight into achieving the latter. As part of its development of technology for tail-pipe PZEV emissions Visteon has undertaken an in-house project to convert a European 2.0 l I4 gasoline family class vehicle from stage III emission to super ultra low emissions (SULEV) - the tail-pipe portion of the PZEV emission standard. The project's objectives are to have minimum additional system complexity and cost, no deterioration in fuel economy and minimal impact on engine power and torque. The following post- and pre-catalyst light-off strategies are discussed: 1. improving engine-out emissions prior to catalyst light-off (clean-start strategy), 2. reducing catalyst light-off time (the volume is splitted into two parts: a 1.2 l close-coupled catalyst next to the engine and a 0.8 l underfloor catalyst), 3. improving catalyst efficiency after light-off (choice of platinum group metal loading, fuel shut-off during deceleration). The significant design changes needed to fuel storage and delivery systems, in order to meet zero evaporative PZEV emissions, are also addressed.
