The automotive industry has been actively evaluating and building modules for some years, but many car manufacturers may have been disapointed by the benefits generated so far. Some of the industry drivers are examined for the modular approach, and looked at how far functionally integration has been taken, and how certain technologies can allow functional integration to be taken significantly further. Tier one supliers have taken over the projekt management of cockpit modules in certain cases, but do not get always significant architectural freedom. As a result, the engineering design is often limited to interface management, and only relatively minor functional integration is achieved. The involvement in the very early architectural choices leeds to a new level of co-design between the supplier and the car manufacturer. For this an example is given, where traditional design is replaced by integrated electronics directly connected to proprietary flat wire, including elimination of unnessessary redundancies, reducing of wiring paths, elemination of 33 electrical connectors, 8 electronic modules and 180 discrete electronic parts. Using 3-dimensional mechanical and electrical CAD enabled engineers to save between 4 and 6 kg per cockpit and additional between 20 and 27 litres of packing space.
