In order to ensure systematic separation of steel and copper windings coming from shredded electric motors, the paper concentrates on the conception and the manufacture on an industrial scale of a new DC 12 V electric motor, taking advantage of the possibilities given by powder metallurgy technology applied to magnetic circuits. A representative electric motor has been selected in the field of car equipment, to demonstrate the feasibility of the new design, the economic validity of the production process and the improvement of copper/iron separation during the end of life vehicle crushing. The motor which was chosen is a 310 W motor used to drive a fan in an engine cooling system. The design of the new motor is the result of a compromise between technological constraints linked to material forming, mechanical and magnetic performance.
