Full-scale shipboard measurements of ship propulsion plant performance can provide the necessary experimental data for theoretical analysis and validation of computer simulation models. In the framework of a transnational project, powerplant performance measurements were conducted onboard a 4600 TEU (twenty feet equivalent units) containership. The extensive measurement data was used for the validation of a 'virtual powerplant' simulation code. This detailed model for marine diesel engine powerplants can be used for performance prediction as well for control and optimisation purposes. Adequate modelling accuracy was obtained for both steady state and transient cases. Based on simulation results using the 'virtual powerplant' code, a simpler transfer-function type model was developed and then utilized to design an improved engine speed controller. This novel speed controller was used back into the 'virtual powerplant' code and the predictions showed improvements in the transient performance of the powerplant. The engine transient operation was simulated and the simulation results were in very good agreement with the measured data. Using the validated simulation code, the engine operation with fuel index changes and with sinusoidal and load profiles was simulated and the results were used for the tuning of a simplified transfer function engine model. Using this transfer function model, improved engine speed controllers were proposed. The improved controller proposed here, would allow safer running near the limits of the engine operating envelope which may motivate the specifying of smaller margins for the powerplant.
