In US Patent 6231094, Compagnie Plastic Omnium of Lyons, F, discloses a filament-reinforced composite intended for use for the bumpers of automobiles. To make the beam, the inventor uses a rectangular sheet of thermoplastic reinforced with filament yarns. Such a material should be able to drape and possible prepregs include Vetrotex's Twintex or DuPont's Typex. The bumper comprises a shield, a beam and two local shock absorbers mounted on each end of the side members. The high-efficiency shock absorber may be an extruded polycarbonate honey-comb presenting the form of a truncated pyramid of rectangular section.
