R + S Technik GmbH, Offenbach, D, has invented a soft touch trim for the dash boards of automobiles. It is designed to maintain its character at corners, edges and other sharply contoured surfaces. The material comprises a cover film and foam layer laminated to a form-stable substrate without the use of adhesives. The trim is contoured in two dimensions. The foam between the cover and the substrate should have reduced density and increased thickness at the more strongly contoured areas. To make the trim a six-step process is needed. Importantly the foam layer is neither thinned or compressed in the sharply contoured sections. The thickness of the foam in the contoured areas is 5 - 30 % geater than the remainder of the foam and its density is 5 - 30 % less.
