A battery test bench has been comissioned to facilitate the continuous testing of battery packs for hybrid-electric and all-electric vehicles over user-defined driving cycles. The test bench combines a regenerative power supply with accurate and continuous duty cycle control, to enable the collection of accelerated life-cycle data. Results are included from a life-time test on a hybrid-vehicle lead-acid battery pack, which exhibits a 40 % loss in capacity over 400 hours of simulated vehicle use. However, the loss is due to a reduction in capacity of only a small number of cells in the pack.
