High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps are chosen by today's car industry due to their inherent high luminous efficiency and to the improved night time conditions which allow better driving concentration thanks to its lower dazzling effect. From the other side such types of lamps are much more difficult to drive with respect to conventional bulbs because of highly non-linear current-voltage characteristics. Main building blocks include a starter to ignite the lamp, a DC-DC converter to ensure constant power whatever the battery voltage and the intrinsic lamp voltage, and a full bridge converter (electronic ballast) generating an alternating voltage to sustain the arc. In some cases low-frequency square waves (around 250 Hz) are generated that require specific hiqh voltage switches such as the PowerMESH STGD3NB60SD IGBT vvith monolithic integrated freewheeling diode. High-frequency ballasts, mostly used for public lighting, are also used with marked improvement in efficiency whereas they can be used practically with any lamp thanks to their operation well above acoustic resonance. In the latter case the new MDmesh MOSFET is ideal and extremely suitable because of its very small on-resistance and low gate charge that lead to a significant reduction of both on- and switching losses.
