With the new 20V-version of the Series 8000 engine, MTU has extended the upper end of the power range of its product program. The Series 8000 is designed for a broad range of applications including use in ships, heavy locomotives and as a genset engine for stationary electricity generation. At first, the 20V 8000 will be offered for applications such as high-speed ferries, naval vessels and yachts. MTU has accumulated considerable experience in the fast-ferry market through the sale of well over 100 Series 1163 engines. This knowledge, as well as all the technical potential of MTU was utilized to develop the new product. The goal of creating an engine with low life-cycle costs and high reliability leads to a clearly structured engine design with thoroughly proven components. The low specific fuel consumption of 195 g/kWh, long service intervals between scheduled major overhauls (fast-ferry marine application: 24000 hours), with simplified maintenance makes Series 8000 especially interesting for commercial applications. The common rail fuel injection is controlled by the electronic engine control system and ensures that exhaust-emission legislation, particularly the IMO restriction in marine applications, are not exceeded. The achievement of the low specific fuel consumption in spite of meeting these restrictions was made possible through extensive development of the combustion system. The requirements, the design of the engine, and the technical solutions are discussed in the paper.
