In recent years, the market for low-speed marine diesel engines has been characterised by a steady growth in overall demand. Volume of new building orders has been fairly steady at some 25 million tonnes deadweight throughout recent years, requiring about 12 million bhp of low-speed engines a year. However, the great increase in orders for large containerships has meant that this level was virtually doubled in 2000 to 21 million bhp. Higher bunker prices in the past two years have made fuel consumption a more critical factor in operating cost but ship speeds are still being kept up, unlike other times in the past when oil prices have been high. Engine's first cost is still very important and needs to be further reduced. Primarily, it is related to the cost of production and used material but quality cost need more and more to be taken in account to get the real cost picture. Life cycle cost analysis allows the cost of transportation to be optimised over the whole lifetime of the ship. This article describes the Sulzer low-speed engine programme and covers especially the following issues: - products and their development; - calculation results for bedplates / girders; - simulation tools for main bearing behaviour analysis; - the reliability and the quality issue; - new developments; - the environmental issue; - looking towards the future. The low-speed diesel engine will continue to be the prime mover of choice for deep-sea shipping for many years to come. Bunker fuels for shipping are something of an unknown for the future. It is clear that sulphur contents will need to be reduced to achieve desired reductions in sulphur oxides emissions. Reducing the impact of diesel engines on the environment is the design challenge of the coming years. Further reductions in emissions are possible and a growing number of owners are looking for emission levels below those set by the IMO regulations. The RT-flex common-rail injection system will undoubtedly play a role.
